What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is not what the majority of people think it is; it is not mind control nor is it an unconscious therapy which you will not remember anything. Hypnotherapy is an altered state of consciousness, so you are aware of what is going on during a session, and you will remember the whole of the session when it is over. You will have experienced hypnosis on a daily basis, for example when you drive a car, do you think about changing gear or operating any of the other controls? Or do you just drive the car while thinking about what you are having for your tea for example! That is hypnosis; for those of you who don't drive have you ever been lost in a good novel, and your mind is not in the room but in a fantasy land in the novel, that is an altered state.
Hypnotherapy can treat a lot of conditions and problems in a person's life, What may seem trivial to one person may be a huge problem in another's life. It can be like dropping a pebble into a pond and watching the ripples get bigger and bigger, it is the same ripple at the start but gets bigger and can seem to be out of control.
What Can Hypnotherapy Treat?
Hypnotherapy can be used for lots of different conditions ranging from stopping smoking to insomnia, from pain relief to skin conditions. Here are a few examples that would benefit from Hypnotherapy. |

About Hypnotherapy
Opinions vary on the exact definition of this natural state of mind. First of all, contrary to popular belief hypnosis is NOT a sleep state even though a person in hypnosis may appear to be sleeping. There is no legal definition of hypnosis. We experience hypnosis in our every day living, like when we become engrossed in a novel or a motion picture; we are in a natural hypnotic trance.
All hypnosis is Self-Hypnosis, and the power is in the mind of the person being hypnotised, So in reality the hypnotherapist is more like a guide who facilitates the hypnotic process. It is an altered state of conscious awareness into which you allow yourself to enter, with the guidance of a therapist.
When something new happens to us, we remember it and learn a particular behaviour in response to that circumstance. Memories stored in our brains hold the original physical and emotional reactions that occurred when the given memory was first formed. Each time similar events occur again, the physical and emotional reactions attached to the memory are repeated. These reactions may be inappropriate or unhealthy. During a hypnotherapy session you are guided to remember the event that led to the first reaction, then we separate the memory from the learned behaviour, and reconstruct the event with new, healthier emotions and reactions.
Does a hypnotised person give up control?
Do we give up control of our minds during a film? When is the last time you got so involved during a film or TV show that you actually felt emotion? You were literally in a hypnotic trance, although you still have the power to emerge from the state if desired. You are in control all the time, you always know what is happening, and you can come out of the altered state at any time in the same way one can snap out of a vivid daydream.
A film, TV show, self-hypnosis tape or hypnotherapist may guide your mind, but YOU still have control and the power to resist. Even though there are some people who seem to partially give up control of their minds, that is because of a misunderstanding, certainly one can be tricked into believing that he/she has given up control in some forms of stage hypnosis. ALL HYPNOSIS IS SELF HYPNOSIS!! AND I DO NOT DO STAGE HYPNOSIS, I am a hypnotherapist not a hypnotist, I stress the therapy bit!
Will I reveal all my secrets?
No you will never say or do anything that will go against your principles, beliefs, or values.
What does hypnosis feel like?
Since hypnosis is a natural state of mind, clients are often surprised that they hear every word. Unless one enters a deep state, or at least a medium state, you may not feel any different than when relaxing in your favourite easy chair with a good book.
You may feel quite mellow, and may feel light or even weightless, you may even feel heavy as if you were sinking in to the chair.
If you enter a very deep state the feeling may be almost euphoric or being slightly intoxicated! (but without the side effects) In a light state it is possible for you to think that you have not been hypnotised at all.
What's involved in a typical hypnotherapy treatment?
No clothing will be removed for a hypnotherapy session. A typical treatment would start with a consultation, (treatments are charged at £50.00 per session) payable by cash or cheque at the end of your appointment. The consultation will consist of a short form for you to tick the relevant boxes relating to your situation, and then we would discuss the information you have provided. It will be explained to you how hypnosis works and what to expect. Once we have covered all aspects of your problems we will form an approach to your therapy. Treatment involves you relaxing in a comfortable chair and allowing your mind to do what it needs to do to make the changes required. Some of the sessions are recorded and put onto CD for you to take away with you to listen to at home, this is to re-enforce the treatment. |
